Textual Harassment

Sexting

  • Do not give your private information to anyone. (Do not be too trusting)

  • Block the person to prevent them from contacting you

  • Do not engage with the person

  • Contact police on harassment

    • So they can investigate to determine whether the abusive person has committed a crime 

    • Document all data of harassment

  • Legal options

    • Civil: Protection orders requested by you, granted by a judge can restrict the abusive person from contacting you or coming near you

    • Criminal: Investigation done by the police that may end in a criminal charge and prosecution of the person

  • Depending on how someone has harassed you, may be able to report harassment to the technological companies 

    • Phone calls and/or text messages: Telephone companies have the ability to suspend the service of anyone, including the harasser 

    • Many, if not all, social media platforms do not condone harassment and have their own policies on how to deal with it (instagram, twitter, facebook, etc.)

  • Never take photos of yourself that you wouldn't want everyone such as classmates, friends, co-workers, etc to see

  • Check the image or text that you are sending because you can’t control who may see it

  • If anyone pressures you to send deviant material, do not give in and talk to a trusted adult such as a parent or teacher

  • Think about the consequences of sending sexual materials to someone such as Kicked off sports teams, humiliation, lose opportunities, or face investigation

  • Report it to the website or apps where the image is posted. Make it clear your child is a minor and it was posted without consent.

  • Continue to offer support. Assure them that you’ll get through this together. Consider seeking professional counseling if they need help coping.
